Davis, Palma Lead Vassar Women's Lacrosse Past St. Lawrence

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 6, 2013) – Sophomore attack Dara Davis scored a season-high five goals to lead the Vassar College women's lacrosse team to a 13-9 win over visiting Liberty League rival St. Lawrence at Weinberg Field Saturday afternoon. The win was the first for the Brewers over the Saints since 2009. Sophomore defender Jacqueline Palma notched a career-high seven ground balls to pace Vassar's defense.
 
Davis scored her first goal of the day 3:15 into the contest to knot the score up 1-1; following a Saints goal, she scored again with 24:36 left in the first half to spark a 7-1 Vassar run that gave the Brewers a lead they would hold until the final buzzer.
 
The win improved Vassar to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in Liberty League play while St. Lawrence dropped to 7-5 (3-2 Liberty League). The Brewers step out of conference to host Old Westbury at 5:00 pm Tuesday, April 9 while the Saints host conference rival William Smith at 4:00 pm Friday, April 12.
 
Freshman midfielder Isabelle Goldstein scored three straight goals as part of that 7-1 Vassar run midway through the first half; she added an assist to finish with nine points on the weekend.
 
Leading 9-5 at halftime, sophomore midfielder Katherine Stegmann set the tone for the second half when she took a pass from senior defender Elizabeth Annis just 17 seconds after the opening draw control and beat St. Lawrence goalie Adden Cunningham. Davis would score two more goals with sophomore midfielder Sophia Rosetti adding one of her own to help the Brewers hold the Saints off down the stretch.


Sophomore goalie Katharine Pula recorded a season-high 12 saves, her highest total since March 16, 2012 at Oneonta, to push Vassar to the win. Palma caused four turnovers to go along with her seven ground balls.
 
Brigid Hurley scored four times to lead St. Lawrence offensively; the Saints also got two goals each from Joey Kelley and Holly Noyes. Noyes also won eight draw controls and six ground balls on the afternoon.
