Marissa Reilly scored the game-winning goal in double overtime.

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 20, 2013) – Senior midfielder Marissa Reilly took a pass from freshman midfielder Isabelle Goldstein and scored with 2:05 left in double overtime to give the Vassar College women's lacrosse team an intensely dramatic and crucial 15-14 Liberty League victory over visiting Union Saturday at Weinberg Field. The win leaves the Brewers on the verge of qualifying for the Liberty League tournament for the first time since 2007 and marked Vassar's first triumph over the Dutchwomen since 1997.

Ahead 9-7 at halftime and 10-7 after a Goldstein score just 24 seconds into the second half, Vassar then found itself needing a rally after Union scored five unanswered goals to take a 12-10 lead. The Brewers would answer the bell three different times. First, Vassar scored twice to tie it 12-12, then it secured the equalizer with 3:20 left in regulation following a Union go-ahead goal. Sophomore midfielder Katherine Stegmann was involved in all of those scoring plays with a goal and two assists.

With 3:06 left in the first overtime period, Union midfielder Heather Fraser scored the last of her four goals on the night to put the Dutchwomen up 14-13. Junior defender Phoebe Tzannes answered back for the Brewers on a free position shot with 2:18 to play to force the contest into double overtime with the golden goal rule in effect.

Goldstein won the draw control to start the second overtime and during Vassar's first offensive possession found a cutting Reilly in front of the net for a shot past Union goalie Kim Grinhaus.

The victory improved Vassar's record to 11-3 overall and 5-3 in the Liberty League; the 11 wins are the second highest total in program history while the five conference wins tie a school record set in 2007. The Brewers host Bard at 2:00 pm Saturday on Senior Day; a win will qualify Vassar for the four-team Liberty League tournament May 3-4 at RPI, St. Lawrence or William Smith. Union (6-6, 4-3 Liberty League) returns home to Schenectady, N.Y. to host Skidmore in conference action at 4:00 pm Friday.

Sophomore attack Dara Davis scored four goals to lead the Brewers, improving her team-leading total to 40 goals on the season. Tzannes added a hat trick with Stegmann (two goals, two assists) and Goldstein (two goals, one assist) also scoring multiple goals. Tzannes won four draw controls while sophomore defender Jacqueline Palma won five ground balls and caused four Union turnovers. Sophomore goalie Katharine Pula recorded three saves.

Emily McGrail had five goals and seven draw controls to pace Union with Fraser adding four goals. The latter's twin sister Brittany picked up a team-high four ground balls while Grinhaus made five saves for the Dutchwomen.
