Box Score
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 19, 2013) – Freshman midfielder
Isabelle Goldstein scored four goals, including the game-winner with 21.5 seconds left, to vault the Vassar College women's lacrosse team to a key 10-9 Liberty League victory over visiting William Smith Friday afternoon at Weinberg Field. Today marked Vassar's first win in program history against the Herons in 12 tries.
Trailing 7-5 at halftime, Vassar senior midfielder
Michela Garrison scored just 16 seconds into the second half to spark a comeback effort that would see the Brewers tie the score 8-8 on a Goldstein free position goal with 15:58 to play. Hannah Connolly took a Rachel Hughes pass and scored for William Smith just 17 seconds later, but a tremendous effort by sophomore goalie Katharine Pula and the Vassar defense would keep the Herons off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.
Sophomore attack
Dara Davis scored a free position goal to tie it up again 9-9 with 6:02 to go leading into the tense final minutes. Vassar took possession with less than 2:00 on the clock and would be awarded another critical possession on a re-start with approximately 35 seconds left. Goldstein took the ball of the whistle and beat Herons goalie Marina Guigli for the game-winning tally at 00:21.5. The Brewers salted the win away as a yellow card was then assessed to Herons head coach Brighde Dougherty, resulting in Vassar automatically being awarded the draw.
With the victory, Vassar improves to 10-3 overall and 4-3 in the Liberty League, reaches the 10-win plateau for the first time since 2008 and keeps alive its shot at the program record for victories in a season (12) set in 1997 and again in 2007. William Smith falls to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in Liberty League action. The Brewers host Union at 7:00 pm tomorrow evening while William Smith travels to Bard for a 2:00 pm game.
