Strong Second and Third Sets Lead Men's Volleyball Past Medaille

NEW PALTZ, NY (March 9, 2013) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team withstood a tough first set against UVC opponent, Medaille College, winning it 26-24 and continued to finish the match in the next two sets, 25-17 and 25-15, capturing an opening win of the UVC Crossover II at SUNY New Paltz Saturday afternoon.

Down in the first set, 18-13, the Mavericks went on a 7-1 run, taking their third lead of the set, 20-19. The run was highlighted by Medaille's David Hill and his two kills and Erin Kelly's one kill. Two Trevor Barrett attack errors and two points awarded by the officials put Vassar back ahead, 23-20. Barrett redeemed himself five serves later with the game-tying kill, 24-24. Senior Matt Elgin's kill took the lead followed by the set-winning kill by senior Patrick Donohue.

The early win in the crossover brings the Brewers to 12-7 and 5-4 in the UVC as they will next face Elmira College at 9:00 am and D'Youville College at 1:00 pm Sunday in the final day of the crossover. Medaille keeps their winning record of 12-7 and 6-2 in the UVC despite the loss. The Mavericks face New York University tomorrow at 11:00 am, wrapping up their final day of the crossover.

Vassar and Medaille were locked in a back-and-forth point battle for the first 15 serves of the third set with the scoreboard in favor of the Brewers, 8-7. A mix of attack errors on Medaille and kills from junior Joe Pyne, freshman Reno Kriz, senior Charlie Caldwell and senior John Konow gave Vassar an eight-point lead off of its 11-4 run, 19-11.

After some mild errors on the Brewers' defense, Pyne and Kriz added two more kills while three attack errors on the Mavericks sealed the deal on the set and the match.

Vassar held the lead for the entire second set.

Elgin led the Brewers with 10 kills and four block assists. His hitting percentage was a match-high, going .714 off his 14 attempts. The Brewers hit for .304 as a team with another high percentage from Konow (.667). Pyne also had 10 kills (.318). Konow had 28 assists and senior Christian La Du had 10 digs.

Vassar outblocked Medaille, 16-7 (14-4 dig assists, 2-3 dig solo) and narrowly had more digs than the Mavericks, 29-28.

Medaille was led by Barrett with 14 kills out of his 31 attempts (.258) and Kelly with 11 kills from his 24 attempts (.292). Cory Philips had 32 assists and Brandon Kilijanski had seven digs.
