ROCHESTER, NY (March 30, 2013) – Unbeaten through its first five games of the 2013 season, the Vassar College women's lacrosse team came up just short in its effort to stretch the streak to six as the Brewers fell 13-11 to host RIT in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon. Sophomore attack
Dara Davis had two goals and two assists to lead Vassar.
Vassar controlled the run of play for much of the first half, erasing an early one-goal deficit and going ahead 5-2 with 11:40 to play until halftime. It was at that point that RIT's Shelby Vakiener, the 2012 Liberty League Player of the Year, started to get hot, which would ultimately be Vassar's undoing. Vakiener scored the final two goals of the first half to bring the Tigers within one at the break and then erased an early second half 6-5 Brewers edge with three straight goals to give the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.
Vassar dropped to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in Liberty League play while RIT improved to 7-2 (2-0 Liberty League). The Brewers open the home portion of their conference schedule at 4:00 pm Friday against Clarkson while the Tigers visit Union on the same date and time.
Down 13-9 with just over a minute remaining, Vassar fought back valiantly as sophomore midfielder
Katherine Stegmann scored off a Davis pass with 1:01 to play and senior defender
Elizabeth Annis found the net via an assist from sophomore midfielder
Sophia Rosetti with 15 seconds left for the final margin.
Annis, Davis, Stegmann and junior defender
Phoebe Tzannes all scored twice each for the Brewers. Davis won four draw controls while freshman midfielder
Isabelle Goldstein picked up four ground balls and sophomore defender
Jacqueline Palma caused six turnovers. Sophomore goalie Katharine Pula recorded seven saves in a complete game effort between the Vassar pipes.
Vakiener finished with seven goals and an assist to lead RIT to the win while Ashleigh Caruso and Marlee Vlassis also scored twice each for the Tigers. Katelyn Crane made seven saves in 60 minutes to earn the victory in goal.
