Women's Lax Opens Liberty League Play With 13-4 Win Over Rochester

Tzannes recorded her first hat-trick of the season.

ROCHESTER, NY (March 29, 2013) – The Vassar College women's lacrosse team continued their winning streak with a huge 13-4 win over Liberty League opponent University of Rochester behind the four-goal performance of sophomore attacker Dara Davis, Friday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Davis was 4-for-4 with her shots while also winning a draw control and picking up two ground balls. She was joined in the scoring rampage by junior defender and captain Phoebe Tzannes. Tzannes recorded three goals off her four shots and added three ground balls and one assist.

The Brewers remain perfect with a 5-0 record and have started the Liberty League portion of their schedule off with a 1-0 record. They will next face Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday at 3:00 pm. The Yellowjackets fall to a record of 1-5 and 0-1 in the Liberty League. They will next host Bard College on Saturday at 3:00 pm.

Davis scored all four of her goals back-to-back in the first half. All four were also unassisted at 20:15, 10:31, 7:51 and 4:51. Freshman midfielder Isabelle Goldstein added an unassisted goal at 4:01, rounding out the scoring for Vassar in the first half.

Rochester's Elisabeth Watson recorded a goal with 1:50 left in the first half.

Vassar then added four more unassisted goals in a row to start the second half from Tzannes, senior midfielder Marissa Reilly and junior defender Catherine Fiore. Sophomore midfielder Katherine Stegmann scored the Brewers next two goals. The first came off a Goldstein assist, while the second one followed a Rochester goal.

Tzannes reached her hat-trick at 8:57 with an assist from Stegmann. Senior defender Elizabeth Annis finished the Brewer scoring at 4:59 off an assist from Tzannes.

Sophomore goalie Katharine Pula got her fifth win of the season with 11 saves and three goals allowed. She made four point-blank stops in the first 15 minutes of play while Vassar held onto their 1-0 lead. Marissa Traina picked up the loss for the Jackets with eight saves and 11 goals allowed.

Vassar collected 25 ground balls, with Reilly, Tzannes, sophomore defender Jacqueline Palma, senior midfielder Michela Garrison and junior midfielder Malena Harrang collecting three each. Davis and junior midfielder Nicole Magney had two caused turnovers apiece. The Brewers caused eight giveaways.

Caroline McManus had six ground balls for Rochester and Sara Skinner picked up four. The Yellowjackets caused ten turnovers, three by Liza Maizel, and two apiece by McManus and Elizabeth Kilbridge.
