POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 24, 2013) – Sophomore midfielder
Sophia Rosetti scored a career-high five goals to lead the Vassar women's lacrosse team to a 19-7 win over visiting Mount Saint Mary in its home opener Sunday afternoon at Weinberg Field. The Brewers have now started the season with four straight wins for the first time since 2008.
Rosetti (five goals, one assist) and freshman attack
Isabelle Goldstein (four goals, one assist) accounted for nine of Vassar's 19 goals; the Brewers scored 19 goals in a game for the second time in four outings in 2013 and very nearly recorded their first 20-goal game since March 28, 2011 against Farmingdale State.
Vassar (4-0) is now just one win away from tying its 2012 victory total and will travel to the University of Rochester for its Liberty League opener Friday, March 29 at 4:00 pm. Mount Saint Mary dropped to 6-3 on the year with the loss; the Knights will face New Paltz at 6:00 pm tomorrow evening in Kingston, N.Y.
As they did in yesterday's win over New Paltz, the Brewers broke open an early stalemate by scoring four straight goals in the latter part of the first half. Rosetti put Vassar up for good at 4-3 with 9:03 left in the first half with an unassisted goal and Goldstein followed up with a pair of scores of her own plus an assist to junior defender
Phoebe Tzannes.
Leading 10-4 at the break, Vassar would push its advantage to 11-4 before a pair of Katie McGinnis free position goals let MSMC back within five goals with 20 minutes remaining in the contest. The Brewers refused to let the Knights any closer, however, scoring eight of the game's final nine goals to sew up the victory. Rosetti scored four of those goals with freshman midfielder
Kim Mulvehill recording her first career points on a goal and an assist late in the second half.
Sophomore attack
Dara Davis scored three goals for Vassar to record her third consecutive hat trick. Junior midfielder Malena Marrang led the Brewers defensively with six ground balls and three caused turnovers while sophomore defender
Evie Toland picked up five ground balls and caused three turnovers. All three of Vassar's goalies saw action Sunday with sophomore
Hilary McDonnell making five saves in 16:13.
McGinnis was the only Knight to score twice on the afternoon; Deirdre Ray made 10 saves in net while Ela Igdeler won six draw controls for Mount Saint Mary.
