Box Score

KINGSTON, NY (March 23, 2013) – The Vassar College women's lacrosse team used 10 unanswered goals across halftime to break open a close game with local rival New Paltz and cruise to a 15-4 victory Saturday afternoon at Dietz Stadium. Sophomore attack Dara Davis scored four goals for the second straight contest to lead the Brewers, who improved to 3-0 on the season for the first time since 2008 and handed the Hawks (2-1) their first loss of the year.

Although New Paltz cracked the scoreboard first on a Lianne Valdivia goal approximately four and a half minutes in, Vassar promptly answered with three quick tallies of its own. Davis took a pass from freshman midfielder Isabelle Goldstein and put it past Hawks goalie Jackie Ulanoff at the 24:25 mark to tie the game, then assisted on the go-ahead goal by junior defender Phoebe Tzannes three minutes later. The Brewers won the ensuing draw control and Goldstein scored just 25 seconds later for a 3-1 advantage.

After senior defender Elizabeth Annis scored off a pass from senior midfielder Michela Garrison for a 4-2 lead halfway through the first half, the two teams went into a defensive struggle as neither side scored for 12 minutes. The Brewers eventually seized control heading into the half as Tzannes, Davis and senior midfielder Marissa Reilly all found the net for a 7-2 Vassar lead at the intermission. In total, Vassar held New Paltz scoreless for 31:27 before the Hawks put up another goal.

The Brewers would impose their will on the Hawks with six more unassisted goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half as Goldstein efficiently distributed the ball to Annis, Davis, Reilly and sophomore midfielder Katherine Stegmann.

Davis finished with four goals, an assist, three ground balls and two draw controls to lead Vassar to the victory while Annis and Reilly put up three goals and an assist apiece. Goldstein dished out four assists with Tzannes (four draw controls) and senior defender Lindsay Haggerty tying for the team lead with five ground balls each. Sophomore goalie Katharine Pula made 10 saves between the pipes for the Brewers.

Valdivia scored two of New Paltz's four goals while Ulanoff made eight saves for the Hawks. Today's game was moved to Kingston's Dietz Stadium due to unplayable conditions at the SUNY New Paltz Turf Field.

Both Vassar and New Paltz will host Mount Saint Mary in their next contests, with the Brewers hosting the Knights at 4:00 pm tomorrow afternoon at Weinberg Field. Live Stats will be available at VassarAthletics.com. The game will mark Vassar's home opener for the 2013 season.
