NEW PALTZ, NY (March 10, 2013) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team picked up two UVC wins Sunday afternoon against Elmira College, 3-1, and D'Youville College, 3-0 during the UVC Crossover II held at SUNY New Paltz.
Freshman
Reno Kriz broke a 17-17 tie in the third set against Elmira with a kill, followed by two service aces, putting Vassar ahead, 20-17. A kill from Elmira's Ryan Nerney and a Vassar attacking error brought Elmira within one point of tying the game, 21-20. Between an attacking error from Elmira's Mike Ellison and kills from senior

Joe Pyne, the Brewers put the set away and went on to win the 3-1 match, 25-15, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19. The Brewers had a somewhat easier time with D'Youville as they went on to win it, 25-16, 25-15, 25-18.
Vassar improves to 14-7 and 7-4 in the UVC with the pair of wins. The Brewers will next travel to Kenosha, WI for the Carthage College Invitational where they will face Rust College at 11:00 am and Carthage at 5:00 pm on Saturday, March 16. The Soaring Eagles of Elmira will next host Medaille College on March 20 with a record of 14-9, 6-4 in the UVC. The Spartans (9-10, 3-7 UVC) will next travel to Penn State – Behrend on March 14 for a 7:00 pm match.
The Brewers fought back in the second set against Elmira while being down by at least four points for most of the second half of the set. Senior
Charlie Caldwell had a kill followed by a block assist from Elgin and senior
John Konow, bringing the score within two points, 21-19. The Eagles went on a 3-1 run, pulling ahead 24-20. Vassar had one more outburst in order to bring the score within a manageable grasp when Elgin blocked an attack from Ryan Gelenitis, making the score 24-21. Chris Pierantoni put the set away with a kill for Elmira on the next serve.
The Brewers had a higher hitting percentage than the Eagles. Vassar had 52 successful kills on its 115 attempts (.313) while Elmira capitalized only 46 kills from their 131 attempts (.160). Pyne led the Brewers with 16 kills (.500), followed by Elgin's 11 kills (.588) and five block assists and Kriz's 11 kills (.192) and 10 digs.
Konow had the match-high 42 assists and also added two kills, four block assists and five digs as well. Senior
Christian La Du had 12 digs.
Vassar also finished 42 kills of its 89 attempts during Sunday's second match against D'Youville (.315) while the Spartans hit 22 of 85 (.047).
Pyne led Vassar with 14 kills on 25 attempts (.200) while senior
Patrick Donohue had a perfect five kills on five attempts. Konow added 21 assists while Pyne led with seven digs.
