Volleyball Splits Opening UVC Matches; La Du Sets School Career Digs Record

With 16 digs in two matches, La Du now has 1,001 for his career.

BUFFALO, NY (February 8, 2013) – In the first of two United Volleyball Conference Crossover weekends, the Vassar College men's volleyball team spilt its matches, sweeping Penn State-Behrend, but falling to No. 5 Nazareth at Medaille College. Against Penn State-Behrend, senior libero Christian La Du earned six digs, becoming the school's all-time leader in that category.

In the opener, Vassar defeated Penn State-Behrend 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-21). Against Nazareth, the Brewers fell (20-25, 18-25, 25-27). Vassar (2-3, 1-1) will next face Hilbert on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.

La Du earned 16 digs in the two matches, giving him 1,001 for his career, surpassing the record of 994 set by Kyle Giunta in 2008.

25-17, 25-20, 25-21


Against Penn State-Behrend, the Brewers rarely trailed in any of the three sets. They led start to finish in the opener, trailed only 2-1 in the second set and came back from being down 7-3 in the third set. The first two sets displayed the best attack efforts of the season, .577 in the first and .467 in the second. Vassar didn't make a single attack error in the first set and only four in the second.

The Brewers went wire-to-wire in the first set building a 17-10 lead and surging ahead 20-13 on a kill from junior Joe Pyne. Senior Charlie Caldwell finished the set, 25-17, off a kill.

Vassar opened up a 17-12 lead in the second set off a kill from senior Patrick Donohue. Penn State-Behrend got within 21-18, but kills from Caldwell Pyne, and closing block solos from Donohue and freshman Reno Kriz earned Vassar the 25-20 win.

The third set saw the Brewers trail 7-3, earn a 12-10 lead after a kill from sophomore Artie Blissert and then surge ahead 17-13 off a Kriz kill. Vassar capitalized on nine Penn State-Behrend errors in this set, but despite those errors, the Brewers held a scant 23-21 lead before sophomore Colin White-Dzuro earned a big point and a Penn State-Behrend attack error accounted for the 25-21 match victory.

Senior Matt Elgin had a perfect match with 10 kills and no errors on 15 attempts. Freshman Reno Kriz earned nine kills and senior Charlie Caldwell had seven. Senior John Konow had 23 set assists and La Du led the defense with six digs.

Kocher Grant and Steele Nathan had 11 kills each for Penn State-Behrend (2-5, 0-2, UVC).

Nazareth 3, Vassar 0

After falling behind 9-5 against Nazareth in the first set, the Brewers made a concerted run, getting within 16-15 and then 17-16 following kills from Kriz in both cases. But the Golden Flyer had enough offense and used kills from Grant Levermore to win critical points and take the first set 25-20. Vassar didn't make an attack error in the first set Nazareth only made two attack errors in the opening set

In the second, Nazareth jumped ahead 9-3 behind the serving of Levermore and the Brewers never got closer than three points (13-10). After being perfect offensively in the first set, the Brewers had nine errors and seven kills.

The third set got interesting at 14-14. The match was tied seven more times and the Brewers sat on set point, leading 24-23, Nazareth tied the set 24-24 after a kill from Cole Hunter and then took a 25-24 lead after a Vassar attack error. Elgin tied the match at 25-25, but Nazareth hitter Bobby Beeman made back-to-back kills for the victory.

Kriz led the Brewers with 13 kills. Konow had 27 set assists and La Du had 10 digs.
