Super Sunday, Men's Volleyball Defeats Rivier & MIT At Baruch Invitational

Junior Joe Pyne set a new career high with 14 kills against MIT.

NEW YORK, NY (February 23, 2013) – The No. 14 nationally ranked Vassar College men's volleyball went nine sets of action for the second consecutive day at the Baruch College Invitational, but this time the Brewers came away with a sweep, defeating Rivier College 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 25-30) and a 3-2 slugfest over MIT (25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 17-15),

Now 9-5 on the season, the Brewers will delve back into United Volleyball Conference (UVC) play on Wednesday evening, hosting Bard College at Kenyon Hall at 7:00 p.m.

The Rivier victory was highlighted by a career-high 20 kills from freshman Reno Kriz. His play enabled Vassar to come back and win the contest. In four matches at Baruch, Kriz amassed 60 kills. Senior Matt Elgin had 14 kills and was named to the All-Tournament Team. The Brewers used 16 block assists and six block solos to control the net against Rivier.

The MIT victory, won 17-15 by the Brewers in the fifth set, featured five Brewers in double figures in kills. Senior Charlie Caldwell and junior Joe Pyne led the way with 14 kills each. For Pyne, the 14 kills set a new career high.

The architect in both matches, as he has been throughout his career, was senior setter John Konow. He had 51 set assists against Rivier and 55 against MIT. Fellow senior Christian La Du led the defensive effort with 13 digs against MIT.
