Men's Volleyball Falls to No. 8 NYU In Straight Sets

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 21, 2013) – The No. 8 nationally ranked New York University men's volleyball team put on a strong performance in sweeping No. 14 Vassar 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-18) on Thursday night at Kenyon Hall.

The Brewers fall to 6-4, 3-3 in the UVC. NYU improves to 7-3, 5-1. Vassar will head to the Baruch Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The Brewers will first face Kean on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. NYU will next meet SUNY New Paltz on the road next Tuesday, February 26, in a UVC match.

In the first set, the Brewers were plagued by serving miscues, committing five, which enabled NYU to control the set. The set was only tied three times, and neither team hit particularly well with NYU at .263 (9-4-19) and the Brewers at -.065 (8-10-31). NYU went ahead 8-5, and the closest the Brewers would come in the set was at 11-8, following a kill from senior Charlie Caldwell, who had three in the first set. NYU surged ahead 18-10 following a Vassar attack error. A kill from the left side by NYU's Nick Benson gave the Violets a 19-12 lead and the visitors took six of the next eight points for the 25-14 win.

In the second set, NYU jumped ahead 4-1, but Caldwell had a nasty crosscourt kill to cut the Violets lead to 7-5. Impressive block assists from freshmen Reno Kriz and Kadeem Nibbs off an attack from NYU's Keith Waddell, coupled with an NYU attack error, brought Vassar within 9-8, the closest the Brewers would come in the set. The Violets kept the pressure on and surged ahead, taking six of the next seven points for a 15-9 lead. Nibbs stopped the flow with his third kill of the match, but Benson answered with a kill down the gut for a 17-12 NYU lead. Benson had four kills in the set.

The final set was the most competitive, tied seven times in the early stages, but the last coming at 9-9. NYU went ahead 14-10 on a Vassar attack error. Following a kill by Kriz, Vassar cut the lead to 17-14 and then 17-15 off an NYU attack error. The Violets kept the pressure on at the net and won three straight points for a 20-15 lead, and closed out the set 25-18.

Vassar was led in kills by Caldwell with seven, Kriz had six. Senior John Konow had 20 set assists and eight digs.

NYU was led by Waddell with 11 kills and Drew Steiner with 10. Connor Mortland had 31 set assits.
