FREDERICKSBURG, VA (February 18, 2013) – The Vassar College men's tennis team showed promise against nationally ranked No. 12 North Carolina Wesleyan College and No. 17 Case Western Reserve University Saturday and Sunday during the Mary Washington Tournament, where the Brewers fell 7-2 and 9-0 respectively.
Freshman
Daniel Cooper highlighted the match against North Carolina Wesleyan with a win in singles and in doubles.
The two losses put the Brewers record at 3-4 heading into their next contest, which will be at home against Liberty League rival No. 22 Skidmore College on Saturday, February 23. North Carolina Wesleyan moves to 2-1 on the season and will next travel to St. Peter, MN for the ITA Indoor Championships on Friday, February 22. Case Western completed a perfect weekend, marking a 3-0 record as they will next face DePauw University on Friday, February 22 during the DePauw Invitational.
Cooper teamed with senior
Nick Jasso in doubles and earned a clutch, 8-6 win over North Carolina Wesleyan's Johan Ljungdahl and Peter Hviid. Cooper also went head-to-head with Hviid in singles play for a close 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 win.
Senior
Andrew Guzick won the first set, 6-2 against North Carolina Wesleyan's Robert Kjellberg, the No. 2 player in the nation, but dropped the second set, 6-3 and the third set, 7-5. He had another close match against Case Western's Will Drougas where he lost in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
