POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 15, 2013) – A steady dose of ten kills each from senior Matt Elgin and junior Joe Pyne, coupled with a .438 attack effort, was too much for Hunter College to overcome, falling to the Vassar College men's volleyball team 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-15) on Friday night in the home opener at Kenyon Hall.

The Brewers had a torrid offensive game, committing only 10 attack errors in 73 chances. Meanwhile, Hunter was riddled with an .015 match, earning 21 kills, but making 20 miscues.

The victory improves Vassar to 4-3 on the season. The Brewers will play both SUNYIT and and Keuka on the road tomorrow. Hunter travels to Stevens on Saturday.

In the three sets, the match was only tied twice.

The first set was the most competitive, with Vassar clinging to several two point leads, and a mere 21-19 lead. Two Elgin kills, one from all Pyne and a Hunter miscue earned Vassar the victory.

The second set was marked by a tenacious ten point Vassar run that took the Brewers from a narrow 11-9 lead and into a comfortable 21-9 position. Strong net play and all-court defense forced Hunter into six errors in this struck and three straight to provide Vassar with the 25-12 win.

A kill from senior Patrick Donohue gave Vassar a 12-5 lead in the final set. With freshman Reno Kriz serving, Vassar went ahead 19-10. In the final stages of the set, Vassar got solid play from Kriz and Pyne to close out the match.

Senior setter had 36 in the match. Kriz had nine kills and a team best .615 attack percentage. Pyne, senior Charlie Caldwell and senior Christian La Du all had five digs.

Alexandru Barbulescu had seven kills for Hunter.
