MIDDLETOWN, CT (December 8, 2013) – The Vassar College squash team traveled to Wesleyan University Sunday afternoon to take part in the Wesleyan Round Robin. Vassar earned a 6-3 win over Ithaca College, while dropping a 9-0 outcome to the hosting Cardinals.
In Vassar's match with the Bombers, the Brewers played well, especially towards the end of the lineup. VC earned all five points in the five through nine spots, falling in just two games in those spots. No. 2 player and captain
Kiet Phun (Lincoln, NE/Lincoln) picked up a straight set victory with an 11-7, 11-6, 11-6 score line to start the scoring for Vassar.
No. 5 player
David Garfinkel (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) earned a hard-fought five-set victory, rallying from down a set at 2-1 to earn an 11-8, 9-11, 5-11, 11-8, 17-15 marathon victory. For Garfinkel, it marked his fourth win of the season. Senior
Alan Darer (Chestnut Ridge, NY/Rockland Co.) breezed by his opponent in the No. 6 slot, winning in straight sets with scores of 11-5, 11-0, and 11-1.
Freshman
Carly Scher (Penn Valley, PA/Herriton) won a spirited match at No. 7, taking an 11-8, 11-6, 18-6 victory, while fellow freshman
Isabelle Bertram (Salt Lake City, UT/West) posted an 11-9, 11-3, 11-8 victory as well. Vassar also chalked up up a default win at No. 9, as
Michael Iselin (Delmar, NY/Doane Stuart School) walked though for the triumph.
Against host No. 19 ranked Wesleyan University, the Brewers struggled to get much going in falling in all nine bouts with the Cardinals. No. 1
Ricardo Espinosa (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Americano de Quito) was in his match with Chris Hart but fell with scores of 11-6, 11-8 and 11-4. Vassar was unable to pick up a game on Wesleyan during the match, as WU earned the win.
The Brewers (2-6) will return to action January 24 at home against the No. 36 Jumbos of Tufts University in play from Kenyon Hall at 6:30 p.m.
