POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 10, 2013) – Thanks to strong play from freshmen
Elsa Stoff (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) and
Olivia Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA/Pennsylvania Cyber Charter), the Vassar College women's fencing squad chalked up three wins Sunday at the VC Invitational.
Walker Field House was host to over 25 fencing strips, as Vassar College welcomed 11 teams on the women's side. The Brewers picked up wins against Queens College (NY), Yeshiva University (NY) and Hunter College (NY). Vassar College also finished the day with a heartbreaking 13-14 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson University.
In the FDU match, the epee lineup was strong as it was all day long. Junior
Megan Lewis (Charleston, SC/Governor's School) posted three of her 11 wins on the afternoon, while Weiss added a trio of victories as well. Stoff had a pair of wins in that match in foil, but FDU earned 6-3 wins in foil and sabre to eke out the victory.
The wins for the Brewers were emphatic, as they captured at least 20 bout wins in all three. Stoff led the way for VC, as she went an outstanding 19-5 on the afternoon in foil. Foil teammate
Claudia Carcamo (Clifton, NJ/Montclair Kimbeley Acad.) racked up 11 wins on the day as well, while sabre fencers
Kathleen Konno (Newburgh, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) and
Lily Elbaum (Troy, NY/Ottumwa) each added 10 wins apiece.
The epee group was stellar all day for head coach
Bruce Gillman, as Weiss finished with a 16-6 record. Lewis added 11 wins, and
Rachel Messbauer (Springfield, MA/MacDuffie School) won 10 bouts as well. The epee team as a whole went 44-28 on the day, as team captain
Noelle Sawyer (Nassau, Bahamas/St. John's College) won three of her four bouts Sunday.
Vassar will host the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational this upcoming Saturday, as the day starts at 10 a.m. in Walker Field House.
