SCHENECTEDY, NY (October 19, 2013) – Coming off a loss Friday night to Union College, the Vassar College women's volleyball rebounded well by earning victories over Rochester Institute of Technology and Skidmore College in Liberty League action from Union Saturday. The Brewers knocked off both teams in four games, rebounding from being down a set in each match. Final scores in the matches were 19-25, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-23 against RIT, and 21-25, 25-19, 25-22 and 25-20 against Skidmore.

In the first match of the afternoon, the Brewers (17-13, 7-5 Liberty League) had to compete with the Liberty League's leading attacker in RIT freshman Sarah Szybist. The Tigers (14-16, 3-4 Liberty League) hit nearly .400 in the first set, taking a 1-0 lead over VC in the early going. The Brewers would even the match at one set apiece though, using a 9-2 run though the middle of game two to pull away.

The third set of the contest saw Vassar really swing it, attacking at a .355 clip for the set, registering 16 kills in all in taking a 2-1 match advantage. The fourth set was a classic back-and-forth game, boasting 11 ties in all. With the score tied at 18 after three straight RIT points, Vassar used two service points and a kill from Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucy's Priory) to pull away for the big match victory.

The Brewers chalked up a very balanced attack against the Tigers, as four players finished with nine or more kills. Senior Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco) was stellar against RIT, posting 14 kills in 25 attempts, missing only twice. She also added five total blocks on the match.

Taylor Mosley (Dallas, TX/Parish Episcopal School) had 13 kills, and Pitre hit .625 on the game, earning 10 kills in 16 attacks, adding four blocks as well. Freshman Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) had nine kills, three aces and five digs, while Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) had a game-high 18 digs.

Senior Rose Carman (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) had 42 assists, five digs, four service aces and three assisted rejections, while fellow senior Lydia Bolton (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) added two aces. Szybist finished with a game-high 28 kills for the Tigers, attempting 57 attacks on the match.

The Brewers again had to pull themselves out of a hole, falling to Skidmore in game one after the Thoroughbreds used a 9-1 run in the middle of the set to take control. In the second stanza, Miller led Vassar with six kills in helping VC tying the match at one set apiece. In the third frame, both teams held leads before being deadlocked at 19. Vassar picked up three straight points, and Mosley tallied a kill to end the game and give the Brewers a 2-1 lead.

In the final game, Vassar led the entire way but a 7-0 run by Skidmore knotted the match at 20. The Brewers showed their meddle though, rattling off the final five points to earn the match and clinch a Liberty League Tournament appearance.

Miller had her best game as a collegiate player against Skidmore (9-14, 2-7 LL), as she chalked up a team-leading 17 kills to go with nine digs. Mosley added another double-double, finishing with 15 kills and 15 digs, and Cardillo had a huge defensive game with eight total blocks and nine kills.

Senior Jessie Ditmore (Santa Barbara, CA/Laguna Blanca) had eight kills and no errors, blocking three attacks, and Pitre added eight kills and six total rejections. Defensively, Hallum moved up to No. 7 on the single-season dig list Saturday, as she now has 484 on the year after a game-best 26 against SC.

Carman had a stellar performance against Skidmore, as the senior setter had 52 assists, along with a career-high 15 digs and four blocks. Freshman Sierra Tobin (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) was strong in the back for VC, getting up seven Skidmore attacks.

The Brewers are now done with Liberty League play for the season, and have to wait and see if they will qualify. After Saturday's play Vassar sits in fourth place in the League, four matches up on RIT. Though RIT still has four conference matches to play, VC swept the Tigers and would hold the tiebreaker.

Vassar is off for a week before heading to New London, CT for a tri-match with Connecticut College and Coast Guard Academy Saturday, October 26 at noon.
