ROCHESTER, NY (September 21, 2012) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team opened its first weekend of Liberty League play with a pair of 3-0 sweeps over St. Lawrence (25-16, 25-19, 25-23) and Rochester Institute of Technology (25-23, 25-19, 25-13) on Friday at Clark Gym.
The victories raise Vassar's record to 7-2, 3-0. The Brewers will face Clarkson at RIT on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Vassar 3, RIT 0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-13)
In Vassar's second match on Friday against RIT, senior
Chloe McGuire led the way with 13 kills and only three attack errors. Sophomore
Clara Cardillo was perfect with eight kills with no miscues on 14 tries. Sophomore
Taylor Mosley had seven kills for a rapidly improving frontline. Senior
Hilary Koenigs had 34 of Vassar's 36 set assists. A strong defensive effort was spearheaded by freshman
Chloe Hallum who had nine digs and Mosley, who had eight.
The first set was the most hotly-contested, with no team able to extend more than a two point lead for most of the going. Vassar did edge ahead 23-18 following an RIT attack error, but the Tigers came back with four straight points to trail 23-22 and come within 24-23. Cardillo iced the set win, however, off a Koenigs assist.
Vassar led for virtually all of the second set, earning 15 kills with only two miscues (.419). The Brewers strung out a 19-11 lead with Mosley serving eight straight points. RIT made a late set move, but it was negated by kills from junior
Jessie Ditmore and Mosley and the set winner from sophomore
Marie Pitre.
The final set was lopsided in Vassar's favor. RIT had its worst attack percentage set at -.138 and the Brewers raced out to a 20-10 lead, largely capitalizing on a Tiger team that had nine errors and five kills in the set.
Vassar 3, St. Lawrence 0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-13)
Defense ruled the match against St. Lawrence as the Saints hit .072 for the match, earning only 28 kills against 20 attack errors in 111 attempts. The Brewers had seven total blocks and dug 33 balls, 15 coming from Hallum. Mosley had nine digs.
The Brewers hit well enough in the first (.226) and third (.238) sets to sweep the Saints. Ditmore led the way with nine kills and only two attack errors. Cardillo continued her sparkling play with seven kills with two attack errors. Koenigs accounted for 29 of Vassar's 30 set assists.
