CANTON, NY (April 27, 2012) – The St. Lawrence women's lacrosse team raced out to a 5-1 lead within the first eight minutes of the contest, built a 13-3 lead at halftime and defeated Vassar 20-8 on a chilly Friday afternoon in Liberty League play.
Though down 5-1 early, Vassar did come within 6-3 at the 17:10 mark of the first half when freshman midfielder
Sophia Rosetti tallied her first of three goals, but that three goal margin was the closet the Brewers would come the rest of the game. St. Lawrence had a big first half, out-shooting Vassar 23-6 and controlled ensuing draw controls (13-4) after goals.
The loss drops the Brewers to 5-9, 2-6 in the Liberty League. St. Lawrence improves to 7-6, 5-3. Vassar will conclude the season at Clarkson on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. St. Lawrence hosts Bard College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
Five different players scored goals for the Brewers, led by three from freshman midfielder
Sophia Rosetti and two from sophomore
Emma Carter. The Brewers had 13 shots in the contest.
Brigid Hurley led the Saints with five goals. Alanna Piroli and Stephanie O'Rourke each had three goals for a St. Lawrence team that had 10 different players figure into the scoring column and had 31 shots against a trio of Vassar goalies.
For Vassar, freshman Katherine Pula made two saves in goal and allowed 12 goals. Senior Heather Kessleman made four saves and allowed six goals.
Saints goalie Paige Powell made three saves and allowed five of Vassar's eight goals.
