Second Half Surge Lifts Skidmore Past Women's Lacrosse, 11-7

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 21, 2012) – The Vassar College women's lacrosse team was locked in a neck-and-neck struggle in the first half against Skidmore College, but the Thoroughbreds pulled away with six consecutive goals in the second half for an 11-7 victory under sunny skies at Weinberg Field.

Vassar falls to 5-8, 2-5 while Skidmore improves to 9-6, 4-4. The Brewers conclude the season next weekend traveling to St. Lawrence University for a 4:00 p.m. contest on Friday April 27, followed by a matchup with Clarkson University at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday April 28. Skidmore finishes its season next week hosting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The Brewers struck first when senior midfielder Libby Feltch found a cutting Marissa Reilly in front of the net. After Skidmore answered back, freshman attack Dara Davis scored the first of her team-high two goals. Once again the Thoroughbreds rallied with two goals, to take a 3-2 lead. The Brewers took their final lead of the game, when Feltch grabbed a draw control and fed ahead to a streaking freshman midfielder Katherine Stegmann to tie the game at three, followed by a fast break goal by Davis, giving Vassar a 4-3 lead.

In the second half Skidmore ran off six goals to start the half, holding Vassar scoreless for the first 19:59 of the half. The Brewers rallied back with three consecutive goals, one each by sophomore midfielder Zoe Ripecky, freshman midfielder Sophia Rosetti and sophomore attack Emma Carter.

Senior Heather Kesselman started in goal for the Brewers surrendering five goals, while registering three saves. Rachel Klein made four saves for Skidmore in the net.

Senior defender Elise Heffernan and sophomore midfielder Malena Harang each led Vassar with three groundballs. Freshman Spencer Morgan recorded a game-high four groundballs for the Thoroughbreds.

Prior to the game Vassar honored its six graduating seniors Kesselman, Feltch, attack Maura McCarthy, defender Austin Gitomer, defender Caroline Kessler and Heffernan.
