DANBURY, CT (April 11, 2012) – Western Connecticut junior attack Devon Edwards scored with one second remaining in the second overtime to propel the host Colonels to a dramatic 15-13 victory over the Vassar College women's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon.
The game has a frenetic final four minutes, as WestConn rallied from a 12-10 deficit to tie the contest 12-12 on a goal by Edwards with 1:07 to play. Vassar junior midfielder
Marissa Reilly answered with a goal with just 15 seconds remaining for a 13-12 Vassar lead. With five seconds remaining, the Colonels got a goal by senior attack Kaitlyn Arconti to force overtime and then scored a player-up goal in each of the two six minute overtimes for the 15-13 victory.
The loss drops Vassar to 4-6, while Western Connecticut improves to 8-3. The Brewers will resume Liberty League play with an away game against Bard College on April 17 at 7:00 p.m. WestConn travels to Southern Maine for a Noon contest on Saturday.
Behind a five goal performance from Davis, who scored three of her goals in the first half, the Brewers built a 7-4 halftime lead. While the Colonels fought to catch the Brewers, it wasn't until the 1:07 mark that the game would be even, following Edwards' eighth goal of the game. Reilly's goal gave the Brewers what appeared to be a narrow victory before Arconti's goal forced overtime.
Statistically, the game was even across the board, though WestConn goalie Karli Portnoy made 14 saves in the game, Vassar freshman goalie Katherine Pula had five.
