WEST PALM BEACH, FL (March 7, 2012) – The Vassar College women's lacrosse team used a five goal spurt to break free from a 4-3 lead and parlayed a balanced offensive attack to register a start-to-finish 17-6 victory over Bridgewater State College on Wednesday morning in the second of three SpringFling games in Florida.

Eight different Vassar players figured into the scoring column, as the Brewers scored six straight times in the final 17:30 of the first half to take a scant 4-3 lead and build it into a 10-4 intermission lead. During the run, junior midfielder Marissa Reilly scored two of her three goals.

Vassar improves to 2-0 on the season, while Bridgewater State loses its season opener. The Brewers will play their final game on Florida on Friday at 9:00 am against St. John Fisher. Bridgewater State next faces Fredonia State on Friday at 11:30 am.

“We played as a cohesive unit against a very athletic Bridgewater State team that didn't give up,” said head coach Judy Finerghty. “Our depth and team speed made a big difference today and it was great to give everyone playing time.”

Offensively, the Brewers dominated the contest with a 31-12 shot advantage, and had three players earn a hat trick, led by Reilly's second straight, one from freshman attack Dara Davis and one from sophomore defender Emma Carter. Davis added two assists. With the lead in hand, Vassar played its entire roster, getting a pair of first intercollegiate goals from freshmen Sophia Rosetti and Leigh Baldwin and two from sophomore Malena Harrang.

Freshman goalie Katharine Pula earned his second victory of the season behind a five save effort. She allowed four goals.

Following halftime, Vassar scored five straight goals, two coming from Davis, to build a 15-4 lead with 12:10 remaining. At that time, the Brewers replaced Pula in goal with freshman Hilary McDonnell.

Bridgewater State goal two goals each from junior defender junior attack Shelby Farland and Sammi Salverio. Freshman goalie Jessica Polaski made six saves and allowed 13 of Vassar's 17 goals.
