Hunter Edges Men's Volleyball 3-1

Vassar falls to .500 with loss, 16-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-27

BOX SCORE

NEW YORK, NY (March 6, 2012) – The Hawks of Hunter College defended their home court Wednesday night, scratching out a narrow four-set win over #10 Vassar, 16-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-27. Despite another impressive performance by junior Matt Elgin – a match-high 20 kills and a .400 hitting percentage – and a career high 14 kills from sophomore Joe Pyne, the Brewers were unable to overcome the Hawks' efficient offense and opportune scoring.

Hunter improves to 10-7 (7-0 in the CUNYAC) and return to the court at home vs CCNY on Thursday, March 8. Vassar drops to .500 at 6-6, and will travel this weekend to Nazareth College for a United Volleyball Conference Crossover, looking to improve their 2-4 record in UVC play. They will face Hilbert College on Saturday at 11:15 AM, then D'youville and Penn State Behrend on Sunday. Results and details will be available here.

After giving away the first set, mustering only seven kills while making 10 errors to hit -.115 for the set, the Brewers bounced back to have one of their best offensive sets of the season, hitting .483 while racking up 15 kills. With the match tied 1-1, Vassar had opportunities in the third and fourth sets, but Hunter came from behind in both to squeeze out tight victories with identical scores of 27-25. While being a statistically very tight match – only eight offensive points separated the two teams – Vassar's edge in kills (59-56) and aces (5-0) was offset by 17 service errors on the night.

Along with Elgin and Pyne's performances, junior setter John Konow amassed 46 assists and junior libero Christian La Du led all players with 12 digs. Hunter was led by Chris Newcomb with 17 kills.
