CLAREMONT, CA (March 5, 2012) -- The Vassar College men's tennis won two doubles points and split the singles matches in dramatic fashion for a narrow 5-4 win over Haverford College on Monday at Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the match even at 4-4, junior
Nick Jasso clinched the victory with a clutch come-from-behind 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Andy Dougherty at No. 4 singles.
The Brewers (7-2) play Occidental tomorrow, March 5, at 2:00 p.m.
Vassar took what proved to be a crucial 2-1 lead after doubles as
Andrew Guzick and
Ben Guzick blanked Kevin Caulfield and Danny Himelstein 8-0 at No. 1 doubles and Jasso and
Wilson Platt topped Will Garrett and Natty Sergay 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Senior
Ben Guzick put Vassar up 3-1 with a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over Natty Sergay at No. 2 singles. Haverford evened the score at 3-3 with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
The Brewers went up 4-3 with a win by
Dan Freeman over Matt Romei of Haverford 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). Haverford evened the score once more at 4-4 with a rare loss by Vassar at the No. 1 singles position to set the stage for Jasso's heroics.
Jasso dropped the first set to Dougherty 6-3 but came on strong for 6-4, 6-3 wins in the next two sets to seal the victory for Vassar.
