Women's Lax Dropped by William Smith, 17-5, In Liberty League Opener

GENEVA, NY (March 30, 2012) – Freshman midfielder Sophia Rosetti tallied her first collegiate hat trick, but a dominant performance by William Smith led the host Herons to a 17-5 victory over the Vassar College women's lacrosse team in the Liberty League opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.

The Herons jumped out to a fast 9-1 start and led 9-2 at intermission. William Smith increased that lead to 16-2 with 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Brewers were able to score three of the game's final four goals, two coming from Rosetti.

Vassar drops to 2-3, 0-1 on the season, while William Smith improves to 2-3, 1-0. The Brewers will remain in Liberty League play, travelling to Union for a 2:00 p.m. game on Saturday. William Smith next hosts Bard College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Vassar junior midfielder Marissa Reilly scored the game's first goal just 23 seconds into the contest, and then the Herons took control of the contest scoring nine straight goals. Junior defender Elizabeth Annis scored Vassar's other goal.

Ten different William Smith players figured into the scoring, with senior midfielder Kathryn Gillan and junior midfielder Kathleen Ragan each scoring three goals each. Ragan also added three assists.

Freshman goalie Katharine Pula allowed 13 goals and made seven saves against 25 shots. Senior Heather Kessleman saw action in the second half and made one save, allowing four goals.

Sophomore goalie Maggie McNair got the win for William Smith. She made three saves.
