ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (March 28, 2012) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team won for the ninth time in its last 11 matches with a 3-0 victory over Bard in a United Volleyball Conference match on Wednesday night. Set scores for Vassar were 25-16, 25-19 and 25-23.
Next up, the Brewers host the Vassar Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Vassar will play Baruch and Johnson & Wales on Friday, and Newbury and Springfield on Saturday.
The Brewers, 7-4 in the UVC, 15-8 overall and ranked 10
th in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Div. III poll, cruised through the first two sets. Bard's only lead over those first two sets was 1-0 in the second set.
The third set was tighter. The Raptors (1-11 UVC, 9-15 overall) led from the start, although the lead never exceeded six points. As the set wore on, Vassar closed the gap. Vassar eventually took its first lead of the first set, 18-17, on an ace by freshman
Artie Blissert (Midlothian, VA), and although it was nip and tuck the rest of the way, the Brewers never relinquished the lead and took the final set, 25-23.
Sophomore
Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA) led the winners with 11 kills, while junior
Matt Elgin (Farmington, NY) added 10 kills with no errors and hit .714. Junior
John Konow (Chicago, IL) had 32 assists, and junior
Christian La Du (Westhampton, NY) contributed a team-high nine digs.
Bard senior Nick Chan (Victor, NY) had 18 kills and eight digs in his last home game.
