BEVERLY, MA (March 24, 2012) - The men's volleyball team started the weekend with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-16) win over Southern Vermont, but couldn't finish after after taking a 2-1 set lead over Stevenson, falling in five 15-25, 27-25, 25-23, 18025, 13-15.
Joe Pyne was an offensive force for the Brewers, notching 31 kill on the day, 14 versus Southen Vermont and 17 against Stevenson.
The frist match was close for two sets before Vassar before a dominant third set shut down the Mountaineers.
John Konow earned 42 assists while
Christian La Du added 15 digs, his third match of the last four with 15 or more.
Colin Fearn-Johnson chipped in with four service aces.
After a 10 point loss in the first set - playing immediately following the first match - the Brewers re-grouped and clawed their way to a two set to one lead, only four points total deciding the two sets. Another lopsided win by the Mustangs in the fourth led to the deciding fifth set, another battle decided again by only two points, this time in favor of Stevenson for the match.
Konow was again strong, adding another 54 assists to give him 96 on the day for an impressive average of 12 per set. Fearn-Johnson was the leader on defense with 15 digs, while
Lucas Rathjens added two blocks, matching his total for the first match.
The tournament contines Sunday, March 25th with Vassar taking on #8 MIT at 2 PM, follwed by the host Gulls at 4 PM. Details can be found on the
