Men's Tennis Splits Matches With 9-0 Win Over Drew and 6-3 Loss To Skidmore

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 26, 2012) -- The Vassar College men's tennis team split matches on Sunday with a 6-3 loss to No. 30 Skidmore and a 9-0 sweep of Drew University at Walker Field House.

The Brewers (6-2) suffered their first loss to a Division III opponent and resume play on March 5 against Haverford to kick off the Spring Break trip to Southern California.

Even 1-1 against Skidmore, Vassar's No. 3 doubles team of Nick Jasso and Wilson Platt entered a tiebreaker against Luke Granger and Max Bevan after a key service game by Platt to tie it, 8-8. The breaker started on serve but Skidmore's Bevan struck a down-the-line backhand winner off Platt's serve for the mini-break and a 4-2 Skidmore lead. Skidmore had triple match point at 6-3, but Platt and Jasso rallied for three straight points to even the score at 6-6. The Thoroughbreds snuck away with the next two points for an 8-6 win to put Skidmore up 2-1.

In singles, Nick Jasso came out on fire with a comfortable 6-2, 6-4 win over Miles Ransom at No. 4 to even the match score at 2-2.

Skidmore took a 4-3 lead with wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, leaving only No. 3 singles in the third set and No. 6 singles. Vassar needed both matches to pull out a win but Skidmore picked up the fifth point to clinch the victory as Danny Knight defeated Kapoor 6-1, 6-2.

Junior Andrew Guzick won both matches against Skidmore, defeating Oliver Loutsenko 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and teaming with Ben Guzick for a dominant 8-2 win over Jimmy Sherpa and Alec Hoblitzell at No. 1 doubles.

Against Drew, Vassar took all three doubles points and clinched the match with wins at No. 4 and No. 2 singles. In doubles, Kapoor and Freeman led off with an 8-1 win over Matt Brisotti and Matt Imbo. Andrew Guzick and Ben Guzick topped Elliot Smego and Adam Gerber 8-4 at No. 1. and Jasso and Platt took out Dejedy Hill and Ryan Johnson 8-4 at the No. 3 position.

In singles, Platt raced to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Imbo at No. 4 and Freeman logged the fifth point with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Gerber at the No. 2 spot.
