Box Score

HOBOKEN, NJ (February 12, 2012) -- For the second time in two days, Vassar men's volleyball found itself on the losing end of a close five set match, falling to Elmira 21-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 11-15. Matt Elgin led the Brewers for the third straight match, racking up 18 kills with only one error on the way to hitting a match-high .567.

Elmira is now 12-5 on the season, 4-0 in the UVC and next takes the court at home vs Nazareth on Wednesday. Vassar slips to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Vassar wil host UVC opponent SUNY IT in Kenyon Gym on Wednesday, February 15th at 7 PM.

In their third match of the weekend -- the first of two UVC crossovers where the East and West divisions square off and every match has playoff implications -- #11 Vassar met an Elmira team that had gone 2-0 on Saturday and had yet to lose in conference. The teams alternated wins before needing the deciding fifth set to decide the issue.

The match was very competitive, with Elimira holding only slight statistical edges in the offensive categories. For Vassar, juniors Patrick Donohue and Charlie Caldwell joined Elgin in double-digit kills, each putting away ten winners, with junior setter John Konow dishing 42 assists. Elmira was led by Ryan Gelenitis who led all players with 20 kills while hitting at a .400 clip. It was on the defensive side of things where the scales tipped towards Elmira. The Golden Eagles had four players with 10 or more digs, including a match-high 16 by Wyatt Hamilton, on the way towards 63 total which eclipsed the Brewers' count of 47, led by rookie Colin Fearn-Johnson with 10. At the net, although Elgin notched five blocks for Vassar, the blocking edge once again went to the winners 15-7.

Elgin was the standout for the Brewers on the weekend. The junior middle blocker from Farmington, NY totaled 50 kills - 3.8 per set - with only nine errors on the way to hitting .488 over three matches. He also led the way blocking with 14 overall.
