POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 12, 2012) – The Vassar College men's basketball team fell to Mount Saint Mary College 61-44 in Vassar's final home game of 2012 Wednesday night at the Athletics and Fitness Center.
Junior forward
John Donnelly had the game-high in points with 19. Three Mount Saint Mary players scored in double-digits.
The Brewers (4-5) will next travel to Bard College on January 8 at 8:00 pm. The Knights (5-4) will next travel to Purchase College on January 7 at 7:00 pm.
The Knights opened the first half with a 10-2 run in the first five minutes. Sophomore guard
Curtis Smith hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 10-5. After Mount Saint Mary's Steve Phillips put in a layup to bring the lead to 12-5, Smith drove down the middle of the paint for the easy layup, cutting the score back to a five-point lead in favor of the Knights.
Donnelly stole the ball from Knights' Lenny Ragaglia on the next play and ran down the court for the fast-break layup bringing the Brewers within three points 12-9.
Mount Saint Mary's Anthony Cipriano missed the next layup and Vassar's freshman forward
Nick Johnson pulled down the board, took two steps and passed to Donnelly who was off to the races down court.
Donnelly made the easy lay-in bringing the Brewers within one point.
Vassar came within two points when Donnelly drove in for another layup with 5:17 remaining in the first half making the score 19-17. The Knights pulled away in the final five minutes with an 8-2 run finishing the first half up eight, 27-19.
Mount Saint Mary opened the second half with a 9-1 run making the score 36-20. Vassar responded with a 9-2 run with back-to-back layups from Donnelly, a 3-pointer from Johnson and a jumper from Donnelly making the score 38-29.
The Brewers came within six points when Donnelly hit a 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 9:21 remaining making the score 42-36. Mount Saint Mary responded with a layup from Stephen Steyer bringing its lead to 44-36. Donnelly pulled down an offensive rebound during the next play and then laid it in, dropping the lead down to 44-38.
Mount Saint Mary hit three 3-pointers in a row pulling away 53-38 with less than five minutes remaining. The Knights ended the game with an 8-6 run, putting away the Brewers 61-41.
Chris Pisciotta led the Knights with 16 points. Joe Stabach and Joe Henain each had 12 points.
Smith was second in scoring for the Brewers with nine and sophomore forward
Alex Snyder added eight points and had the game-high in rebounds with nine.
