POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 3, 2012) – Behind a pair of 12 kill performances from senior
Chloe McGuire and sophomore
Taylor Mosley, the Vassar College women's volleyball team swept Stevens Institute of Technology 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-23) on Wednesday evening at Kenyon Hall.
Mosley, who hit .429 for the match, had her fourth straight double digit kill match and fifth in her last six outings. Her attack percentage was her best all season. The consistent McGuire, reached double figures in her fourth straight match, and sixth of the last eight.
The victory improved Vassar to 10-5 and snapped a modest two-game losing streak. Stevens, which only hit .097 for the match, drops to 7-13 on the season. The Brewers will next head to Bryn Mawr College for the Seven Sisters Championship this Saturday and Sunday, with the opening match against Bryn Mawr on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Stevens will next host Elmira College on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
The 25-23 third set victory that clinched the match for Vassar was the most competitively played. Though only tied six times, it was Stevens that controlled play in the late stages, relinquishing a 20-17 lead as Vassar seized control down the stretch. The Brewers tied the set 22-22 and went ahead 23-22 on back-to-back Stevens attack errors. The Ducks were able to tie the set 23-23 off a kill from Kristen Herchenroder, but another Stevens miscue put Vassar ahead 24-23. Sophomore
Marie Pitre capped the win with her fifth kill of the match.
Vassar came out in the first set with a flourish and built up a 10-1 lead with junior
Rose Carman serving. Mosley had three straight kills in that early run. The Brewers led 20-12 and Stevens was only able to cut the margin to six points (21-15) before Vassar won the final four points ending on block assists from Mosley and sophomore
Clara Cardillo.
Vassar never trailed in the second set and raced out to an early 17-10 lead on a strong attack effort from McGuire, Mosley and junior
Jessie Ditmore. Stevens rallied and closed the gap to 17-14 off a Vassar miscue and came within 21-18 off an errant Vassar attack. Leading 22-20, Vassar took a 2-0 lead in the match off final points from Mosley (kill) and Carman (service ace).
On the attack side for Vassar, Ditmore had seven kills and Pitre added five. Senior setter Hilary Koenings accounted for 31 of Vassar's 38 set assists. Freshman
Chloe Hallum led a strong defensive effort with 19 digs.
Stevens got seven kills each from Mary Caulson and Jillian Barrett. Samantha Green had 23 set assists and a team-best 11 digs.
