POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 27, 2012) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team celebrated Senior Day in grand style, sweeping both Farmingdale State (25-11, 25-15, 25-15) and Misericordia (26-24, 25-17, 25-20) at Kenyon Hall on Saturday.
Prior to the Misericordia match, Vassar honored graduating seniors
Hannah Cassius,
Hilary Koenigs,
Cebe Loomis,
Chloe McGuire,
Brittany Stopa and
Christina Verdirame.
With the pair of wins, the Brewers improved to 20-10. On Friday, November 2, Vassar will travel to Skidmore for the Liberty League Championships. The opener pits No. 1 Skidmore against No. 4 RIT at 5:00. As the No. 3 seed, Vassar meets No. 2 Clarkson at 7:30 pm.
In the opener against Farmingdale, Vassar controlled play throughout. Four Brewer players had five or more kills, led by eight kills each from junior
Jessie Ditmore and sophomore
Clara Cardillo. Koenigs had 20 set assists to surpass the 4,000 career set assist total. Freshman
Chloe Hallum had 18 digs.
In the first set, Vassar jumped ahead 18-10. The second set saw the match tied at 14-14 before the Brewers went on an 11-1 run with junior
Rose Carman and Loomis serving. The final stanza was nearly identical to the first, with the Brewers pulling away decisively.
Against Misericordia, Stopa led the way in her final Kenyon Hall match with 13 kills and a .524 attack percentage. Cassius had one of her best all-time dig matches with 10. Koenigs added to her all-time record set assist total with 42.
This match was tighter throughout. The Brewers raced out to a 13-6 lead in the first set, but fought all the way back and took a 24-23 set-point lead off a kill from Samantha Baro. Vassar needed a McGuire kill, an opponent hitting error and a final kill from Cardillo for the 26-24 win.
The second was never tied, and Vassar held true throughout, but Misericordia seemed always in striking distance for a tight finish. At 21-16, junior Megan Anderson helped pull the Brewers to a 25-17 victory. She served two of Vassar's final four points and the duo of Ditmore and Stopa did the rest.
The third set had late ties at 18-all, 19-all and 20-all. With Koenigs serving, Vassar got back-to-back kills from Stopa for a 22-20 lead, then capitalized on two miscues for a 24-20 advantage. Appropriately, senior Stopa earned Vassar's last point for the match victory.
