POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 12, 2012) – Dramatic finishes highlighted a split of two Liberty League matches for the Vassar College women's volleyball team on Friday night at the Athletics & Fitness Center. The Brewers lost a 3-2 (19-25, 25-12, 25-14, 23-25, 8-15) decision to Skidmore, but rebounded effectively with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 26-24) victory over Union.
Vassar (16-6, 7-4), will conclude Liberty League play on Saturday at Bard College with an 11 am match against RIT.
The nightcap match against Union found Vassar down 23-21 and 24-23 in the third set, but two straight service aces by sophomore

Brittany Stopa and sophomore
Clara Cardillo, earned the Brewers a clutch 3-0 sweep.
In the opener against Skidmore, the Thoroughbreds fought back from being down 2-1 to win a 25-23 fourth set with three straight kills. Skidmore then prevailed in the fifth set, 15-8.
Vassar 3, Union 1 (25-11, 25-23, 26-24)
Against Union, Vassar stormed out to a convincing 25-11 first set win, taking seven of the last 11 points on the serving of juniors
Rose Carman and
Jessie Ditmore. The match tightened considerably in the second and third sets. In the second set, Union held a 17-13 lead following a Vassar service error. The Brewers crept back into contention, tying the match 17-17 and again 22-22 following a Stopa kill. Union went ahead 23-22 after a kill by Rachel Wyman, but Stopa answered with her fifth kill of the match. Pitre served two consecutive aces for the 25-23 win.
The third and final set was tied five times, but was Union's for the taking, leading 23-21 and again with set point, 24-23. Pitre again sealed the victory, with her fifth and sixth service aces of the match. In total, the Brewers had 12 service aces.
Senior
Chloe McGuire led the Brewers with 10 kills. Senior
Hilary Koenigs had 30 set assists and freshman libero
Chloe Hallum had 21 digs.
Vassar 2, Skidmore 3 (19-25, 25-12, 25-14, 8-15)
After losing the first set, Vassar put together back-to-back winning sets, hitting .429 and .378 respectively, to take a 2-1 lead against a Skidmore team that came into the match 5-0 in league play.
The Thoroughbreds fought back from a 15-9 deficit to tie the match 17-17 after a Corinne Palmer kill. From that point, the match was tied 21-21 and 22-22, following a Ditmore kill. Skidmore pulled together two key kills down the stretch to earn a slim 25-23 win and force a fifth set.
In the last set, Skidmore surged ahead 8-3 and the Brewers could get closer than five points, falling 15-13.
McGuire had a monster effort with 21 kills and a .347 attack percentage. Ditmore and Pitre had 12 and 10 kills respectively. Koenigs had 49 set assists.
Defensively, Hallum had 28 digs and Ditmore had 20.
