Women's Squash Suffers Three Losses In Preview of Seven Sisters

NORTHAMPTON, MA (January 29, 2012) -- The Vassar College women's squash team went 0-3 on Sunday with a narrow 6-3 loss to the College Squash Association No. 28 William Smith College, a 9-0 loss to No. 26 Wellesley College, and a 7-2 loss to No. 25 Smith College.

“We had two close matches today but we're looking for revenge against Smith and Wellesley next weekend in the Seven Sisters,” said head coach Jane Parker.

The CSA No. 24 ranked Brewers (4-8) host the Seven Sisters Championships this Saturday, February 4, at Kenyon Hall.

In a 6-3 loss to William Smith, Vassar showed strength at the top of the lineup as its top three players won in straight sets. At No. 1, Meg Taylor defeated Caroline Moxley 11-9, 11-5, 11-6. Libby Pei routined Andrea Tran 11-2, 11-5, 11-2 at No. 2 and Nina Punukollu knocked off Lucia Rowe 11-7, 12-10, 11-8 at No. 3. Two of the remaining six matches went to four sets.

In a tight 7-2 loss to Smith, three matches went five sets and four matches went four sets. Vassar picked up wins at the No. 8 and No. 9 positions with gutsy five-set victories. At No. 8, Katherine Cornish was down 2-1 but took over in the final two sets for an 11-7, 8-11, 7-11, 11-3, 11-2 win over Elena Plesco.

At No. 9, Amanda Scott split sets with Szilvia B. Kiss of Smith and took a 2-1 lead with a grueling 14-12 win in the third set. Kiss claimed the fourth set 11-7 to tie the match but Scott prevailed in the fifth for 11-8, 5-11, 14-12, 7-11, 11-8 five-set win.
