POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 18, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's soccer team went toe-to-toe with top-ranked Christopher Newport University (CNU) in a scoreless first half but conceded four second half goals in a 4-0 loss on Sunday at Gordon Field.

The Brewers (5-2-1) open Liberty League play on Saturday, September 24, on the road against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 2:00 p.m. The Captains (5-0-1) face Salisbury on the road on Wednesday, September 21, at 4:00 p.m.

In a physical and fast-paced first half with play flying up and down the field, the Brewers matched the Captains on both ends. Vassar held an 8-7 edge in shots while CNU led in corner kicks 5-4.

CNU made a heavy push in the second half and broke the stalemate two minutes in with a header by Jaylon Brown to the far post on a throw-in by Caleb Lewis.

In the 61st minute, Brian Lybert made a run down the right side and centered it into a crowd. The ball trickled free to Winston Mattheisen for an easy finish on an open net to extend the Captain lead to 2-0.

Karl Kummer put the Captains up 3-0 with a breakaway goal on a long ball from the left side in the 71st minute. Jack Cooper stuck the final goal in the 76th minute on a rebound off a blistering shot by Kummer.

Each team had legitimate scoring opportunities in the first half. In the 22nd minute, CNU's Brendan Cook knocked a header off a corner kick toward an opening in the goal but Vassar defender Zander Mrlik made a goal-saving stop.

In the 30th minute, senior captain Ross Macklin took a corner to the far post which Mrlik headed back across the mouth of the goal just out of reach of a couple of Vassar players. Macklin charged in and struck a header off the bounce but it went right to CNU keeper Justin Wolfe.

Vassar keeper Ryan Grimme made five saves in the loss and Wolfe made four saves to earn the clean sheet.
