POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 13, 2011) -- Behind a second half hat trick from senior captain Ross Macklin, the Vassar College men's soccer team downed cross-river rival SUNY New Paltz for the first time since 2007 with a 3-0 win on Tuesday at Gordon Field.

The Brewers (4-1-1) host Maritime on Friday, September 16, at 5:00 p.m. The Hawks face Union College at home on Saturday, September 17, at 1:00 p.m.

The Brewers started the second half on fire with two goals by senior captain Ross Macklin in the first five minutes. In the 46th minute, Macklin slipped free to the right of the goal on a pass from Juliano Pereiera, and with hardly an angle as he neared the end line, Macklin blasted a goal off the bottom of the crossbar and over the keeper for a 1-0 lead.

“We came out of the gates quickly in the second half,” said head coach Andy Jennings. “It's a credit to the team to come out of the halftime and lift their spirits and find sharpness in their play.”

Minutes later, the New Paltz keeper Conor Power charged and collided with a Vassar player on a through ball. Macklin recovered the loose ball well outside the box and ripped a shot that caught the scrambling keeper out of position to put Vassar ahead 2-0 in the 50th minute.

Macklin capped his hat trick and put the game out of reach with a penalty kick in the 71st minute following a New Paltz foul in the box.

The first half was competitive and scoreless as each team tallied seven shots. While New Paltz settled for longer strikes, Vassar pressured the Hawks with a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. The first legitimate scoring chance of the game came in the 15th minute on a Vassar corner by Macklin. Pereira elevated above the crowd and struck a solid header to the far post but New Paltz defender Robert Wexler made a goal-saving kick save.

Power made three saves in the loss for the Hawks. Vassar keeper Ryan Grimme (3-0-1) made five saves to earn his third win of the season.
