NEW PALTZ, NY (April 6, 2011) – Senior attack
Moe Byrne scored two of Vassar's three second half goals – one that broke a 9-9 tie – and the other that became the game winner, as the women's lacrosse team survived a comeback effort by SUNY New Paltz, and defeated the Hawks 12-11 Wednesday afternoon under rainy and chilly conditions.
The Brewers had built what appeared to be a safe 7-1 lead with 17:38 to play in the first half, but the host Hawks fought back to tie the contest 7-7 with six goals over a 7:28 span. Although down 9-7 at halftime, New Paltz was able to tie the contest at 9-9 with 24:38 to play before Byrne and sophomore teammate
Morgan Namian rescued Vassar with all three of the Brewers' second half goals in the final 19:32 of the contest.
The victory snaps a brief two goal losing skid for the Brewers and improves the season record to 4-4. Vassar travels to No. 3 nationally ranked Hamilton on Friday afternoon for a Liberty League contest at 4:00 p.m. SUNY New Paltz drops to 5-3 and hosts Brockport in a SUNYAC game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
After the Hawks broke out to a 1-0 lead just 43 seconds into the contest, senior midfielder
Sarah Warner scored Vassar's next four goals – one on a free position shot and the other three unassisted – in just under four minutes, to hoist the Brewers into a 4-1 lead. Junior attack
Maura McCarthy, Warner and sophomore midfielder
Michela Garrison added goals to bolster Vassar into a comfortable 7-1 lead. New Paltz would get goals from five different players in just under eight minutes to tie the game at 7-7. Two of those goals came from junior attack Samantha DelGaudio. Warner answered with her sixth goal of the game, and Byrne her first, for a 9-7 Vassar halftime lead.
While the first half featured 16 goals, the second half offered only seven goals and nine less shots. New Paltz, however, was able to tie the game at 9-9 off DelGaudio's third goal of the game with 24:38 to play.
Byrne broke the tie with 20:28 remaining, then added Vassar's all-important insurance goal to make the contest 12-10 with 9:54 remaining. New Paltz scored a goal with 1:15 to play to make for a 12-11 outcome.
Senior goalie
Nicole Engelhardt made six saves in earning the victory. New Paltz tender Stephanie Mignone made nine stops.
