POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 19, 2011) – Vassar College senior women's lacrosse stalwarts
Moe Byrne and
Sarah Warner combined to score 10 goals, seven of which came in a breakout second half, to lead the Brewers to a 13-10 victory over Western Connecticut State University on a damp and rainy Tuesday afternoon at Weinberg Field.
The duo was a veritable wrecking crew. Both Byrne and Warner each netted five goals, with the elusive Byrne notching the game-winner on her fourth goal of the game with 8:31 to play in the fourth quarter. Warner was a nemesis all game, earning six assists and collecting a career-high 15 ground balls.
The victory helps Vassar snap a brief two-game losing streak and improves the Brewers to 5-6 on the season. Vassar hosts Clarkson on April 22 at 4:00 pm in the first of four final Liberty League games. Western Connecticut drops to 6-7 with its third straight loss, and next hosts UMass-Dartmouth on April 23.
It took the exploits of Byrne and Warner to lead the Brewers past a scrappy Colonials team that got six goals from sophomore attack Devon Edwards, four of which came in the first half when WCSC built a 5-3 lead off a goal by sophomore defender Shelby Ingrao with 8:12 remaining until halftime.
Vassar junior attack
Maura McCarthy and attack specialist Byrne both had goals in the final 3:38 of the half – Byrne with 43 seconds remaining – to tie the contest at 5-5.
Just ten seconds into the second half, Swarner went streaking up field from her midfielder position and went straight to goal for a 6-5 Vassar lead, albeit a brief one. Edwards scored back-to-back goals at the 29:09 and 25:52 mark off nifty shot making past Vassar goalie Heather Kessleman for a 7-6 lead. The Brewers found openings in the WCSU defense, however, and proceeded to score seven of the game's next eight goals, all coming from either Bryne or Warner, except for a tally by sophomore defender
Elizabeth Annis -- her first of the year – that helped Vassar regain an 8-7 lead with 21:35 to play.
The Brewers systematically added goals, building a 13-8 lead with 3:48 to play. The Colonials, however, kept the contest interesting, getting back-to-back goals from sophomore midfielder Emily Brooks with 2:25 and 1:52 remaining, respectively, for the 13-10 conclusion.
The Brewers held a 39-20 advantage in shots, with WCSU freshman goalie Karli Portnoy making 14 saves. Kessleman made three saves for Vassar in earning her second win of the season.
