Women's Lacrosse Downed By Bridgewater State, 20-12 In Opener

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (March 7, 2011) – The Vassar College women's lacrosse team opened the 2011 season falling to Bridgewater State College 20-12 on Monday in a Spring Fling contest played in West Palm Beach, FL.

Bridgewater State senior attack Jenny Jones was the catalyst for the winning Bears, scoring nine goals, five coming in the second half. Vassar got a three goal, three assist performance from senior Sarah Warner.

Vassar will play its second game in Florida on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm against Colby-Sawyer. Bridgewater State plays Potsdam State on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the annual event in Florida that opens the women's lacrosse season.

A Vassar goal by junior Maura McCarthy tied the game at 3-3 with 16:22 to play in the first half, but the Bears went on the offensive, scoring eight of the next 11 goals to take a commanding 11-5 lead. Bridgewater led 9-4 at intermission.

The Brewers were able to cut Bridgewater's lead to 16-10 following a goal by freshman Cameron Felt, with 8:24 to play, but the Bears, who got scoring from six different players in the game, were able to tally four of the following six goals for the victory.

Senior Nicole Engelhardt made eight saves in goal for the Brewers. Senior Katie Weber made 13 saves for Bridgewater.
