POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 5, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's volleyball team opened the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Crossover Tournament with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-14) win over Hilbert on Saturday at the Athletics and Fitness Center.
The Brewers (15-8, 2-2) face D'Youville at noon and Nazareth at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, at the Athletics and Fitness Center.

Evan Fredericksen led all hitters with 12 kills, a .556 attack percentage, and two aces. Junior
Clifford Quinn tallied 19 set assists. Sophomore Matthew Elgin chipped in with nine kills and six block assists. Senior Dan Wolfe led Hilbert with five kills and classmate RJ Sykora had 10 set assists.
Vassar trailed early in the third set but pulled away from the set's sixth tie at 11-11 tie with a 14-3 run to seal the straight set victory. Down 8-5, Vassar evened the score with a pair of kills from Fredericksen and a Hilbert attack error. A kill by freshman
Joe Pyne tied the score at 11-11 and then Fredericksen used his vicious serve to build a five point lead at 16-11, with two aces. Pyne closed out the set with four points on his serve and one ace. The Brewers posted their best hitting percentage of the match (.368) with 11 kills and 4 errors.
The Brewers closed out the second set with a 9-2 run to win 25-12 in part thanks to a -.148 hitting percentage by Hilbert.
In the first set, the Brewers took a 4-0 lead but exchanged five ties in the early stages. Vassar broke away from a 10-10 tie with a 10-0 run behind five kills from Elgin to go ahead 20-10. The set ended on a Hilbert service error.
