POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 28, 2011) – Senior attack Sarah Warner set a single-game record with nine goals and the Vassar College women's lacrosse team scored 20 goals for the first time in more than a decade in registering a 20-18 victory over Farmingdale State on Monday afternoon at a chilly and breezy Weinberg Field.

It took a concentrated defensive effort in the second half for the Brewers to edge past the Rams. Junior goalie Heather Kesselman helped spearhead the victory over a Farmingdale State team that fell behind 3-0 within the first four minutes of the game, but overtook the Brewers 9-8 with 10:47 to play in the first half. Both teams then alternated goal scoring and settled for a 12-12 stalemate at halftime.

The victory improves Vassar to 3-2 with Liberty League play beginning this Friday at home against Union College at 4:00 p.m. Farmingdale State evens its record at 3-3 and next hosts Manhattanville on April 5.

Warner scored four of her five goals in the decisive second half. She was the catalyst in Vassar's second half offensive run in which the Brewers broke free from the 12-12 halftime tie and moved comfortably ahead 20-13. The Rams came out of halftime and took a brief 13-12 lead on a goal by sophomore midfielder Emily Williams just 42 seconds into play, but the Brewers scored eight straight goals, four from Warner and two off the stick of senior midfielder Allie Morgan for the 20-13 lead.

Offense was at a premium, especially in the first half with 24 goals earned on 41 shots. The Rams were particularly efficient, scoring 12 goals on 13 shots against Vassar starting junior goalie Nicole Engelhardt. The Brewers peppered Farmingdale junior goalie Courtney Cook with 28 shots in the first half, with Morgan and sophomore Michela Garrison each scoring two goals.

Farmingdale State stayed within a goal of Vassar for the majority of the first half, due in large part to the stellar play of senior attack Justine Rothar who scored all of her six goals in the opening stanza. Williams had four of her five goals in the first half, but it took that duo to counter the five goal performance from Warner, all of which were unassisted, and earned on unstoppable moves around the goal.

Warner was a stalwart at each end of the field, picking up a career-best 12 groundballs in her best overall peformance.

With six second half saves, Kesselman got the Vassar defense focused and in the process earned her first win of the season. Cook faced 43 Vassar shots and made 15 saves.

Down 20-13 with 15 minutes to play, Farmingdale made a late game push, scoring five straight goals, two each by junior midfielder Kim Rigney and sophomore attack Carly Schneider, but the Brewers had the game firmly in hand.
