Men's Volleyball Downed By No. 2 Ranked Nazareth at UVC Championships

ROCHESTER, NY (March 26, 2011) – In its quest to win its first-ever United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Championship, the Vassar College men's volleyball team won its first match over D'Youville College in a 3-0 sweep, but was derailed by the No. 1 seed Nazareth 3-0 in the semifinals.

The No. 4 seed Brewers gave the top seed and the No. 2 nationally ranked Golden Flyers a furious run, falling 25-22, 25-22, 25-21.

Vassar, now 17-11, will play its final home match of the season and honor its lone graduating senior Evan Fredericksen on Wednesday, March 30 against Baruch College at 7:00 p.m. Nazareth (24-3) will meet SUNY New Paltz (20-11) for the UVC Championship on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

The Golden Flyers outlasted the Brewers with hitting percentages of .552 in the first set, .267 in the second set, and .429 in the third set. In comparison, Nazareth held Vassar to hitting percentages of .270 in the first set, .250 in the second set, and .240 in the third set.

Fredericksen tallied a match-high 16 kills and Christian La Du had a match-high nine digs for the Brewers.

Nazareth's Ellis Walsh tallied 11 kills in 14 attempts for a .786 hitting percentage. Junior Billy Gimello also recorded 11 kills while senior Brian Bunch had 10 kills. Sophomore EJ Wells-Spicer accumulated 41 assists. Gimello and Bunch each recorded seven digs.

The Brewers advanced to the semifinals with a 3-0 sweep over No, 5 seed D'Youville, 25-14, 25-23, 25-22. Vassar was powered by a .433 attack percentage in the opening set (15-2-30) and a strong .343 effort (17-5-35) in the second set.

Fredericksen led the Brewers with 14 kills, but it was the near perfect play of sophomore's Charlie Caldwell (9-0-20) and Patrick Donohue (8-0-12) that led Vassar past the Spartans. Sophomore setterr John Konow had 33 of Vassar's 35 set assists and La Du had 11 digs.
