Caldwell's Career Match Leads Men's Volleyball Past Elmira, 3-1

BUFFALO, NY (February 6, 2011) – Led by a career high 12 kills from sophomore Charles Caldwell, the Vassar College men's volleyball team defeated Elmira College 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19) in the second and final match of the inaugural United Volleyball Conference Crossover event at Medaille College on Sunday morning.

The victory evens Vassar's record at 4-4, 1-1 UVC. The Brewers next travel to SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, February 9 for a 7:00 p.m. match. Elmira drops to 3-6, 1-2 on the season and next competes in a tri-match with Sage College and Kean on February 12.

Caldwell, whose previous high of seven kills was earned this season against New Haven, led the Brewers in kills for the first time in his career. His 20 attack attempts were a career best, as was his .500 attack percentage. Caldwell made only two attack errors against Elmira.

Senior Evan Fredericksen followed his 20 kill match against Medaille on Saturday with 10 kills on Sunday morning. Both junior Lucas Rathjens and sophomore Patrick Donohue had eight kills each for the Brewers.

Setting duties were split between junior Clifford Quinn and sophomore John Konow. Quinn had 19 set assists in the match, Konow earned 24.

The Brewers had an all-around solid defensive effort, led by nine digs from sophomore Chrsitian La Du and eight from Quinn.

Elmira was led by Ryan Gelenitis with 14 kills and Eric Sandmann with 13 kills. Elmira hit only .172 for the match. Michael Vellutato had 31 set assists.
