Offensively, the Brewers got a solid match from sophomore Matthew Elgin who had 13 kills and a .409 attack percentage. Fellow sophomore
Patrick Donohue chipped in with nine kills, seemingly all coming at the opportune time and junior
Lucas Rathjens had seven kills. Sophomore setter
John Konow had 52 set assists and sophomore libero Chrisian La Du had 17 digs.
Hunter got a 19 kill evening from sophomore Braien Otsla and 17 kills from junior Eric Barty. Freshman setter Stanley Martinez matched Konow with 52 set assists. Junior Sam Martin had 18 digs.
The match came down to the fifth set, one that saw the Brewers jump out to an 8-3 lead following a Donohue kill. That five point margin held up nicely, and back-to-back kills from Fredericksen pushed the Brewers ahead 13-5. A final kill from Donohue won the set for Vassar.
Hunter was able to force a fifth set with a start-to-finish victory in the fourth set. The Hawks went ahead 11-5 on a kill from junior Ming Huang and kept the Brewers in a four point deficit most of the set. A nifty open court kill from La Du off an intended dig did bring the Brewers within 23-22, but another kill from Ming and a Vassar attack error evened the match at 2-2.
Vassar took the third set 27-25 after being down 15-10. Vassar edged ahead 25-24 off a Hunter attack error, but tied the set at 25-25 following a Otsla kill. The Brewers closed out the set by getting a kill from Fredericksen and a service ace from Donohue.
Hunter evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 victory in the second set. Midway through the set, Vassar four straight attack errors that enabled the Hawks to take an 18-14 lead. Though a Hunter service error brought Vassar within 19-18, the Hawks were able to close out the set with five kills coming from three different players, two each courtesy of Otsla and Barty.
Vassar had just enough firepower in the first set to earn a 25-19 victory, winning five of the final seven points, three of which came off Hunter miscues.
