POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 19, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's tennis team swept Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy 9-0 in the Spring home-opener Saturday afternoon at Walker Field House.

“On paper, we were 18-0, but it wasn't that easy,” said head John Cox, who picked up his first two wins at Vassar.

The Brewers (3-0) travel to Skidmore on Saturday, February 26 for a 1:00 p.m. match. “The team did well today but we know we need to bring it up a level next week at Skidmore,” said Cox.

Against RPI, Vassar swept doubles for a 3-0 lead. In singles, senior Max Willner double-bageled Kyle Burton at No.3 and sophomore Dan Freeman cruised 6-0, 6-0 over James Kim at the No. 4 position.

Against Coast Guard, Willner and sophomore Andrew Guzick knocked off Austin Dean and Chris Hoffman 9-7. “Max and Andrew were very strong and held on to get the go-ahead break at the end,” said Cox. “It was a high quality performance under pressure.”

At No. 3 singles, Willner finished first for the second time with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Coast Guard's Hoffman. “It's a pleasure when Max walks on the court because he's going to give a solid performance,” said Cox. “His experience really showed today.”

At No. 1 singles, Ben Guzick played sharp in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Nick Martin. “Ben gave a great performance and was mentally tough when it counted,” said Cox.

Freeman outlasted Josh Fischer at the No. 4 spot 4-6, 7-65, and 10-5 in the super tiebreaker. “The match of the day was Dan Freeman who stepped up and rolled 10-5 in the super breaker.”
