POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 18, 2011) -- In their only match on the first day of the annual Vassar College Invitational, the Vassar men's volleyball squad rolled to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-14) victory over Johnson & Wales University.
The Brewers improve to 9-6 on the season and will look to maintain their momentum on the second day of play, and in the process capture their fourth straight Invitational Championship. Vassar will face Nazareth College on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The Brewers will then face Lasell College at 2:00 p.m. Johnson and Wales falls to 5-5 on the season. On Saturday, the Wildcats square off against Nazareth at 12:00 p.m. and Creole, a club team, at 2:00 p.m.
Vassar got off to a strong start in the first set, never trailing en route to a 25-12 victory. Sophomore
John Konow assisted on all 11 Vassar kills. The Brewers recorded 11 kills and just two errors en route to a .375 hitting percentage. Senior
Evan Fredericksen set the pace for the Vassar attack recording five of his match-high 10 kills, with zero errors on eight attack attempts, a .625 hitting percentage.
In the second set, the two teams traded points with the Brewers holding a slender lead much of the way. With the squads even at 20, Vassar rattled off five straight points, taking a 2-0 lead in the match. The Johnson & Wales defense held Vassar's attack in check for the set, forcing the Brewers to a match low .258 hitting percentage.
The final set saw Vassar continue where it ended the preceding set — jumping out to an early 10-4 lead. The Vassar attack once again hit efficiently, earning kills on 11 of 21 attempts, for a .333 hitting percentage.

Lucas Rathjens notched seven kills, hitting .375 for the match and sophomore
Patrick Donohue recorded six kills on just nine attempts, a .667 hitting percentage. For the Brewers, Konow and junior
Clifford Quinn split setting responsibilities, with Quinn recording a team-high 19 assists. Sophomore
Christian La Du led all players with 12 digs.
Shawn Kennedy led Johnson & Wales with eight kills and Gerard Daniels with 21 set assists. Alex Viera championed the Wildcats' defense with eight digs.
