Box Score

HOBOKEN, NJ (February 17, 2011) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team saw its two-match winning streak stopped on Thursday night at the hands of Stevens Institute of Technology, which registered a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-21) victory in a United Volleyball Conference match at Canavan Arena.

The Brewers fall to 8-6, 2-2 on the season and will be back in action of Friday night in opening round play of the annual VC Invitational against Johnson & Wales at 6:00 p.m. Stevens improves to 10-3, 3-1 and will next visit SUNYIT on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Vassar was led by senior Evan Fredericksen who had 13 kills. Sophomore Patrick Donohue and freshman Joe Pyne each had four kills. The setting duties were split between junior Clifford Quinn who had 10 and sophomore John Konow who had 13. Sophomore Christian La Du led all players with 11 digs.

Stevens was led by senior SteFan PremDas and sophomore Jake Modestow with nine kills each. Senior Brandt Grobeis had 36 set assists. Freshman David Evans had seven digs.

Stevens captured the third and final set with a 25-21 victory. The set was tied only three times, the last at 11-11. The Ducks built a 19-15 lead off a Modestow kill and maintained a three to four point lead from that point. The Brewers did close the match at 23-20 following a Donohue kills, but a Stevens kill and Vassar service error accounted for the final two points.

The Brewers had the second set tied at 10-10. Stevens capitalized on a series of Vassar attack errors and two kills from Evans to build at 21-13 lead. Miscues continued to plague the Brewers from this point until the final tally of 25-15.

Due in large part to a fast 14-7 start, the Ducks won the opening set 25-17. Down 17-10 in the set, Vassar did climb back to make it 17-13 following a Stevens attack error, but could never get closer than that four point margin. A kill by junior Lucas Rathjens put the Brewers within four points at 20-16, but the Ducks won five of the final six points to win the opening set.
