TROY, NY (February 15, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's basketball team played a close contest to trail by seven points in the second half until an eight-minute, 25-7 run by Rensselaer Polytechic Institute secured a 70-50 win for the Engineers Tuesday night at the East Campus Arena.
The Engineers shot 8-of-27 from beyond the arc and hit four treys during the crucial 25-7 second half run. The Brewers hit 2-of-11 three-pointers.
The Brewers (3-20, 1-11) wrap up the regular season on the road against Hamilton this Friday, February 18, at 8:00 p.m. and at Hobart on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The Engineers (15-7, 9-3) clinched a berth to the Liberty League Playoffs. They conclude the regular season against the first place Statesmen on Friday at 8pm and the fourth place Continentals on Saturday at 4pm.
Vassar came out in the second half with balanced scoring to twice cut its deficit to seven points – the second of which came with 13:47 remaining in the half. It was at that point that RPI regained control behind – in order -- two three-pointers from Mike Brion, two baskets from Jeremy Bull and a pair of three-pointers from Matthew Pooley. Brion then added a two-point basket and four others had two points apiece for a 66-40 lead with 5:11 left.
For RPI, Pooley posted two game highs with 14 points and five assists. Travis Jones added 14 points. Joe Gibbons led the Engineers with seven rebounds.
For Vassar, Junior guard
Caleb McGraw led the Brewers with 12 points. Sophomore forward
John Donnelly collected a game high eight rebounds to go with eight points. Junior captain
Nick Justiz went for 10 points and five boards. Freshman
Lucas Wager scored a career high nine points.
