Fredericksen's Career Best Match Leads Men's Volleyball At Endicott

The senior hitter earned a career-best 26 kills against Endicott.

BOSTON, MA (February 13, 2011) – Sunday matches proved favorable for the Vassar College men's volleyball team which won its final two contests in the Silver Bracket at the Endicott Tournament over Eastern Mennonite 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-19) and Endicott (21-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-23). Against Endicott, the Brewers were powered by a career-high 26 kills from senior Evan Fredericksen who was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Brewers, now 8-5 on the season, have won four of their last five matches. Against Endicott, Fredericksen keyed the victory, but exceptional offense was generated by sophomore Matthew Elgin who had 12 kills and a .733 attack percentage after making only one attack error.

Remaining on the road, Vassar next heads to Stevens Institute of Technology on Thursday, February 22 for a for 7:00 p.m. match.

The deciding fourth set, which clinched the match for Vassar, didn't come as easily as wins in the second and third set. The set was knotted 14 times, the last coming at 22-22 following a kill by Fredericksen. Vassar closed out its final three points off two consecutive attack errors from Endicott and a final kill from Fredericksen, his 26th of the match. The Brewers had 52 digs in the match, many coming in the decisive fourth set. Sophomore Christian La Du had 14 digs, Konow adding 10 digs.

The Brewers went ahead 2-1 in a start-to-finish win in the third set. Vassar broke free from an 8-7 lead by scoring eight of the next nine points for a 16-8 after a Donohue service ace. Back to back kills from Fredericksen and freshman Joe Pyne and a service ace by Quinn kept Vassar in control 19-10 and the Brewers rolled to a 25-16 victory following impressive late set activity from sophomore John Konow, sophomore Patrick Donohue and Fredericksen. From his setter position, Konow had four kills, but most impressively, 52 set assists. Donohue had eight kills.

Down a set, the Brewers eked out a nifty 25-22 win in the second set. The set was tied nine times, the last coming at 16-16. A Fredericksen kill set up by Konow put Vassar ahead 22-20. Endicott closed at 22-21 when Matt Devendorf connected on his attack. Two consecutive service errors – one by each team – kept Vassar ahead 23-22. Back-to-back kills from Elgin and Fredericksen earned the Brewers a tough 25-22 win.

The middle portion of the first set saw the Gulls pull away by three to four points, taking a 10-4 lead off a Vassar attack error. Endicott pushed its lead to 14-10 when Jeremy Siden connected on a kill. But in a set that was only tied four times, the Brewers hung around, betting kills from Fredericksen, Donohue and Caldwell. Vassar knotted the set 19-19 on an Endicott ball handling error but the Gulls scored six of the next eight points for the 25-21 win. Endicott got closing kills from four different players, including two from Joshua Bruno.

Endicott got 14 kills from Siden and 12 from Travis Netherton.

Vassar opened Sunday's play with an impressive 3-0 sweep over Eastern Mennonite University.

Frederickson  registered a game-high 11 kills and John Konow handed out 33 assists to lift the Brewers past Eastern Mennonite in Pool B play. Elgin added nine kills and a team-high four blocks for the Brewers. Sophomore libero Christian La Du paced Vassar's defensive effort with 12 digs.
