Men's Volleyball Splits Matches at Endicott Tournament

BOSTON, MA (February 12, 2010) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team split its opening matches at the Endicott Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers opened with a convincing 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-12) victory over SUNY Institute of Technology. In its second match, Vassar lost a hard-fought four-setter to Baruch 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-27, 23-25).

Vassar (6-5) will continue action on Sunday, facing Eastern Mennonite University at 1:00 p.m. and host Endicott at 3:00 p.m.

In the narrow loss to Baruch, Vassar was led by senior Evan Fredericksen who had a match-high 24 kills. Sophomore Patrick Donohue had a season high 13 kills without an attack error. Junior setter Clifford Quinn continued his steady play with 36 assists. Sophomore libero Christian La Du led all players with 12 digs and Fredericksen had a match-high five blocks.

Baruch got tremendous efforts from an international trio of senior players. Pablo Oliveira (Uberlandia, Brazil) and Eryk Kowalski (Zabno, Poland) had 17 and 15 kills, respectively. Jesus Echevarria (San Juan, Puerto Rico) dished out 41 assists. Oliveira, Kowalski and freshman Nick Smith (Long Beach, N.Y.) each had eight digs in the win whihle Oliveira added four blocks to lead the Bearcats.

In the opening match against SUNYIT, Vassar rolled to an easy three set sweep. Fredericksen and sophomore Charles Caldwell led the way with eight kills each. Quinn earned 25 of Vassar's 26 assists. The Brewers had 21 total digs.
